The power and authority of the Priesthood

What sets The Church of Jesus Christ a part from other churches in the world? How is it different? In the fifth article of faith it declares, “We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.” This authority is called the Priesthood, which is the power to act in God’s name here on earth. Jesus Christ gave His Twelve Apostles this power before he was crucified, so they could teach the gospel and perform miracles just as He did. The apostles were eventually rejected and killed for their ministry. Because of this, the authority Christ had given was lost and Christ teachings and ordinances were corrupted. The full light of the gospel had been swept away into a time of spiritual darkness.

In the early 1800’s, our loving Heavenly Father called another Prophet, named Joseph Smith to restore the Priesthood and the gospel of Jesus Christ back onto the earth. The Priesthood is one of the key elements within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I know that because of this authority my family and I have been blessed. My father has been given this priesthood and was able to baptize me when I was 8 years old.

One of the most personal blessings has come through priesthood blessings. A priesthood blessing is a special prayer offered specifically to one individual. From these special blessings, you can receive healing, comfort, strength, and counsel. It’s so significant to understand that blessings are given through inspiration from the Holy Ghost. In essence, Heavenly Father is speaking through a worthy priesthood holder. I have received many blessings from my Dad and I know that it has been a source of comfort and peace for me in my life. I know The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christ’ church. I know the power of the priesthood is real and that it blesses my whole family. I testify that we have prophets on the earth again today and they are directed by God to do His work and His will.
